If you’re seeing dark patches that come and go after rain, it’s easy to blame “porous concrete.” That’s a can of worms when the real culprit is re-wetting from drainage or trapped moisture under a tight surface. Do the 60-Second Water Test

You get a clearer answer in one minute than from a week of staring at random dark spots. A simple concrete water absorption test helps you separate “needs resealing” from “water keeps returning here.”

Pick a truly dry day; don’t wing it like a Home Depot Pro Desk run and call it “good enough.” Test a few representative spots (sunny vs shaded and near a downspout splash zone). Put a teaspoon-sized puddle or a few drops of clean water on bare concrete (not on dirt or thick paint), start a timer, and watch what happens.

Water that beads for a full 60 seconds usually indicates a tight surface or sealer that’s still doing its job. When it darkens quickly and the water vanishes in under 30 seconds, that section is behaving like an unsealed, more porous surface.

Separate Porosity From Look-Alikes

You can reseal perfectly and still watch the same blotches come back after every storm if drainage issues causing wet concrete are routing water to one edge. The fastest way to waste money is treating a drainage or moisture problem like a surface-porosity problem.

Does it pass a quick visual check? If you only look at dark areas, you’ll misdiagnose concrete more often than you think. A few common look-alikes can make a slab seem absorbent (or the opposite) when the real issue is elsewhere.

Ponding and drainage can mimic “soaking in.” Water keeps coming back like a boomerang to the same low spot. Scrub off algae/mildew first too, since biological staining holds moisture and darkens fast in shade. On the flip side, very smooth, hard-troweled or power-troweled concrete can bead water even when the slab has moisture issues underneath, so don’t treat beading as a blanket green light.

Recent rain or heavy dew can leave the slab slightly damp, which makes the drop test misleading. After 24 to 48 hours of dry weather, rerun the test and compare sunny and shaded areas to isolate absorption from weather effects.
