
Oil and grease soak into your concrete patio because concrete is porous. The liquid runs a maze of tiny capillaries instead of staying on top. Warm concrete thins oil so it spreads fast, and water-heavy cleaning can push it farther down into the slab. That’s why the dark spot often looks like it “comes back” as the slab dries.
If you’re staring at a stain that won’t behave like a normal surface mess, you don’t need a mystery product so much as a better read on what changed. And yes, it’s driving me up the wall when it keeps happening: a new drip pattern from a grill or mower, or wet-dry cycles that pull buried oil back toward the surface. Once you understand that mechanism, you can stop the source, avoid making penetration worse, and use a loosen-and-lift approach that pulls oil out of the pores.
Why Does Concrete Absorb Oil on a Patio?
On Saturday, you wipe up a greasy drip by the grill and the patio looks fine. By Monday, a shadowy blotch has spread wider than the original spill, like it took a shortcut under the surface.
Concrete isn’t a hard, nonporous “floor.” That’s the plain truth. It’s a network of tiny pores and capillaries, so oil and grease get pulled down into the slab by wicking (porous concrete oil absorption) the same way a paper towel pulls up a spill. To illustrate this, a few tablespoons of grill drippings can spread into a surprisingly large dark patch because the oil isn’t just sitting on top, it’s moving through that pore network.
Heat makes it worse. In direct sun, grease flows sooner and farther, so you have less time to blot it before it wicks down. If you’ve been treating this like dirt you can power-wash the heck out of it, that’s why it feels like nothing works, since pressure and water can drive oil deeper. Once the oil is below the surface, pressure washing mostly cleans what you can see while leaving the embedded stain behind, and drying can pull that oil back upward.

If oil suddenly started soaking in, don’t default to “worse oil.” In many cases, something changed in the slab’s protection or in how the spill hits it. Look back 30 to 90 days and ask what shifted, such as parking in one spot or getting small repeat drips from the grill setup. Those slow, frequent hits can load the pores like a marinade working into meat, even when each spot looks minor.
Also check your sealer reality—concrete sealer failed oil stains are often the real culprit. A patio that used to bead water may simply have a worn topical film, while a “penetrating sealer” can still allow oil to mark concrete. Action Plan: Stop Penetration, Then Pull the Stain Out
You can do everything that feels productive—scrub and rinse—and still end up with a darker stain that reappears as the slab dries. The win comes when you stop feeding the pores first, then use a method that pulls oil back out instead of pushing it in.
If you’re trying to stop oil soaking into concrete, the first move isn’t “find a stronger cleaner.” That approach tends to backfire. It’s to stop the slab from taking in more oil, because every rinse-and-repeat while the source is still dripping just loads the pores deeper. For example, if the grill’s drip pan overflows or a mower leaves a slow leak, you can scrub all day and still lose ground.
If the spill is fresh, blot and cover it with an absorbent (floor dry/kitty litter oil stain concrete/diatomaceous earth), the classic Home Depot / Lowe’s weekend project move. Grind it in so it can drink up what’s still near the surface. Skip pressure washing at first since it can force the oil deeper into the pore network.

Once you’ve stopped the source, switch to “loosen, then lift”: apply an alkaline degreaser and let it sit for hours before you rinse. Expect bleedback, meaning the stain can reappear as the patio dries because oil migrates back up.
