Protect Sealed Exposed-Aggregate From De-Icing Salts

If you’ve heard both “it’s sealed, you’re fine” and “any salt will destroy concrete,” your driveway reality sits in the middle. That’s a can of worms. Winter damage usually starts when brine sits on the surface and keeps it wet. That moisture works into joints and edges, then freezing does the rest. Start with a quick risk check

A neighbor can do everything “right” by the bag, then still end up with rough edges in spring because one low spot stayed wet all winter. The fastest wins usually come from spotting where water and brine are lingering.

Choose a safe deicer for concrete

Some winter scaling guidance is based on lab-style ponding tests run over repeated freeze–thaw cycles (e.g., ASTM C672-style scaling resistance protocols).

Reseal the right way for salt resistance

If de-icers will touch the surface, a penetrating sealer (silane or siloxane) is usually the better maintenance reseal choice. Rather than forming a film, it penetrates and blocks water and dissolved salts from lingering in the slab. If you’ve been assuming a “wet-look” topcoat automatically equals more winter protection, reconsider. It can be lipstick on a pig, and I don’t want to make it worse.

Before you buy, do two quick execution checks: confirm what’s already on the concrete (penetrating vs film) and follow recoat compatibility. As an example, if you still have a topical acrylic on the surface, a penetrating product may not absorb until you strip or the film wears off.

Plan the job like a product spec, not a vibe: many silane penetrators land around 240–380 sq ft per gallon, and silane can last longer than siloxane (roughly 7–10+ years vs. 5–7 years, depending on conditions). Apply on a dry forecast window and hit high-exposure zones first: the bottom of slopes and joints.

Reduce Salt Contact Time All Winter

When salty slush sits in a joint overnight, refreezing doesn’t undo the exposure. Instead, the cycle stretches out and keeps moisture and chlorides working at the same weak points.

Sealer helps most when you treat de-icer like a short-term tool, not something you leave to sit and concentrate. Use the minimum you need (spot-treat icy strips, not the whole slab), then when temps rise above freezing, hose-rinse the surface so salty meltwater doesn’t keep soaking into joints. For instance, the bottom of a sloped driveway often stays wet longer, so it needs faster cleanup.
