When Recoating Is a Good Idea

If you catch yourself thinking “it’s not shiny enough, so I’ll just put it on heavier,” stop. When recoats go wrong, it’s usually because the film got too thick, not because there was a second coat.

The Compatibility Rules That Matter
One exposed-aggregate sealer tech sheet puts the recoat window at 4–24 hours (recoat window for acrylic concrete sealer), so a “later” second coat may be outside the intended bond window unless the surface is properly reconditioned.
Before you add anything, figure out what you’re recoating. Is it a film acrylic on top or a penetrating sealer that soaks in like oil into dry pavers? A penetrating sealer won’t reliably bond to an existing glossy film, and a new film won’t behave like it should if the old layer can’t accept it.
The biggest chemistry trap is water vs. solvent. Prep and application to avoid haze

Your prep goal is not “looks clean.” It is “no residue and bone-dry,” like a Sun Joe pressure washer just rinsed it. Wash off dirt and pollen, then rinse well; leftover soap is a common culprit. After it dries, do a quick tape test: stick duct tape down, pull it up, and if it lifts grime, keep cleaning.
When you recoat, apply a light coat, not a heavy one to chase shine. For example, many pros aim for roughly 800–1,000 sq ft per gallon on a corrective coat, keeping a wet edge and avoiding puddles in low spots.
