
You can seal concrete with small cracks and a few rough spots if the slab is solid and dry. You should repair first when cracks are wider or moving, or when rough areas are weak, crumbling, or moisture-stained.
The tricky part is that “small cracks” can mean anything from harmless hairlines to early signs of shifting, and sealer won’t fix the wrong kind. Sealing protects a sound slab and makes cleanup easier, but it won’t fix defects. At its worst, it makes flaws stand out quickly. It peels along a moving crack or locks in a weak patch edge that keeps breaking, like clear-coating a dented fender. The good news is you can sort this out fast with a simple check you can do in about a minute.
The 60-second “seal or repair” test
With the sealer in hand, you can confirm you won’t make the slab look worse. A look at crack width and surface soundness tells you whether you’re protecting concrete or sealing over a problem—and it answers the question: should I repair cracks before sealing concrete?
You can usually seal as-is when the flaws are tight and solid, and it doesn’t need to be complicated—like picking a tool at the Home Depot rent-a-tool counter. Sealer protects concrete, but it won’t level roughness or “glue” failing spots back together, so sealing too soon can lock in ugliness or trap a weak area under a film.

When Sealing Over Small Cracks Fails
A homeowner rolls on a wet-look sealer and, by the next season, the shiny strip over one crack starts lifting like a zipper. Most of the time, that points to movement or moisture that was already present, which is when sealing cracked concrete backfires.
Calling a crack “minor” can be misleading because size isn’t the deciding factor. What matters is whether the crack is active, like a settling foundation line that keeps opening. If the line is actively moving (edges shifting or widening), a sealer won’t hold it together, and a topical sealer can split or peel right along that path.
It also fails when water and salts are already involved: damp areas or recurring dark staining tell you moisture is traveling through the slab, so remove efflorescence before sealing concrete (see Lowes guidance). Case in point: sealing a driveway that’s still pushing salts can trap that activity under the film and cause whitening or flaking. Finally, if the edges are scaling or crumbling, sealing just “glosses over” weak concrete.

What to do before you seal
Even with the right sealer, a slab that isn’t ready can still end up peeling or whitening. Most outcomes come down to prep and drying time, not upgrading to a fancier product.
Focus on prep, not product. Pressure-wash (or stiff-brush and degrease) until cracks and rough spots are free of grit and loose concrete, then let the slab dry fully—pressure wash concrete before sealing. If you can flake out material with a screwdriver or you’ve got cracks around 1/4 inch or more, do the crack fill or patch first and let it cure per the label. Otherwise you’ll seal in a weak edge that keeps breaking, no matter how much Quikrete you throw at it.
Then choose your sealer based on what you’ll tolerate seeing, especially penetrating sealer vs film-forming sealer. A penetrating sealer protects with minimal “highlighting,” while a topical/wet-look sealer can make hairlines and patches stand out and may peel if moisture moves through. If you’re counting on sealer to level roughness, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.
